Based in North Yorkshire, Urban Wyrm was founded by Ashley Day and Chris Holgreaves in partnership with Growmoor and is the reportedly, the only worm cast business of its kind. The company produce a natural range of (peat-free) composts, soil improvers, seedling mixes and liquid feeds made from worm casts, natural microbes and plant-based materials.
Worm casts, also known as vermicast or vermicompost, are the byproduct of earthworm digestion. As earthworms consume organic matter such as decaying plant material, they break it down in their digestive systems, extracting nutrients and beneficial microorganisms. The resulting waste material, known as worm casts, is excreted by the earthworms and deposited in the soil. These casts are packed with essential nutrients, organic matter and microbes, making them a potent soil amendment for gardeners.
To create their range of growing mediums and soil conditioners, Urban Wyrm mix in worms with organic substrate. The worms are fed a nutrient-rich organic diet and then separated from the casts they produce which make up the base of the company’s products.
Charles Dowding, the horticulturalist and author who pioneered modern no dig and organic soil management in the UK since 1983, has endorsed Urban Wyrm and become an affiliate partner. Dowding shall be appearing with the company at Glee Birmingham, where Urban Warm are planning to launch their latest product in the range, Black Gold Organic.
