The Serge Hill Project: Gardening Scholar

Supported by the Rockcliffe Charitable Trust, the Serge Hill Project is recruiting for a gardener for the inaugural post in their new scholarship programme.

Serge Hill Plant Library

The not-for-profit, Serge Hill Project, founded by Tom Stuart-Smith and Sue Stuart-Smith is principled on nature’s ability to transform health and wellbeing, and was set up to foster community inclusion through gardening and other forms of creativity. The project aims to foster community inclusion through gardening and other forms of creativity.

A two-year fixed term post, the Serge Hill Project Rockcliffe Gardening Scholar will support and be trained by the Head Gardener, Millie Souter, in the running and maintenance of the Plant Library. The Serge Hill Plant Library is a unique and extensive educational resource for anyone interested in plants and planting design. Set out in a grid system, the library holds more around 1500 different varieties of mainly herbaceous plants, serving as an interactive catalogue and community of plants.

The post is applicable for a gardener, qualified to RHS Level 2 or equivalent with a passion for education and a commitment to a career in horticulture, to become part of the team with this exciting and multi-faceted role.

The scholarship aims to empower and train new horticulturists to develop strong practical skills and knowledge, from garden care to propagation to planting, whilst supporting them to become an advocate for horticultural education and to launch their careers. A practical, hands-on role based on site, the role also offers opportunities to visit and work in other gardens to broaden experience. The scholar will support the wider work of the Serge Hill Project, which includes much engagement with local schools.
