The RHS has a broad range of education and learning opportunities available for all ages, backgrounds and skill sets. Apprenticeships provide the perfect entry point for a career in horticulture, specialist work placements for those seeking to enhance existing knowledge and skills in a particular area. The two-year Diploma in horticultural practice teaches students everything about horticulture as they rotate through various departments at RHS Garden Wisley.
RHS Level 3 & Level 4 Diploma in Horticultural Practice
Both the Level 3 & Level 4 Diplomas are delivered at RHS Garden Wisley only. Students work in the garden (for a salary) and study part time over two years; the students training is funded by the RHS.
The two-year RHS work based qualifications are designed to give abroad overview of the theory and practice of horticulture. Students rotate through 10 departments in the Garden and attend detailed lecture and masterclass programmes by expert Horticulturists who teach students vital work and employability skills at the same time as achieving horticultural expertise.
Students need to hold a Level 2 qualification in Horticulture as well as hold previous work experience within the industry before applying.
Apprenticeships
RHS Gardens provide work based practical training for apprentice Horticulturists, Arborists and Land-Based Service Engineers. This is complimented by college training as required for the relevant Government Apprenticeship Standard.
Available at all five RHS Gardens, the Level 2 Horticultural Operative Apprenticeship provides a unique focus on ornamental gardening as well as plant growth and propagation. The Level 2 Arborist Apprenticeship, available at RHS Gardens Bridgewater, Rosemoor and Wisley allows teams to focus on the development, maintenance and enhancement of trees within a public garden.
