The announcement was made at the 20th World Rose Convention in Fukuyama, Japan, where rose enthusiasts from 40 member countries gathered. The World Federation of Rose Societies (WFRS) Hall of Fame was established in London in 1968 and recognises exceptional roses through a ballot conducted among its member countries every 3 years. The first rose inducted was the cultivar ‘Peace’ in 1976.

Bred by rose breeder, David C. H. Austin, Gertrude Jekyll® was first introduced at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 1986. Exemplifying the qualities of a classic English rose – rich fragrance, form and timeless charm, this rose reflects the timeless elegance and natural charm that Gertrude Jekyll herself championed in her gardens.

“Gertrude Jekyll is an absolute gem and a worthy winner. Healthy, robust growth, with gorgeous pink blooms, which contain an exquisite and heavenly perfume,” said Derek Lawrence, Executive Director WFRS.

Gertrude Jekyll® is the 19th rose to receive this prestigious award, joining a distinguished group of roses that have inspired gardeners around the world for decades.

David J.C. Austin, Chairman of David Austin® Roses, added: “Gertrude Jekyll’s timeless beauty and fragrance have found a special place in the hearts of rose lovers everywhere, and we are truly honoured it has been named the world’s favourite rose.”

David Austin® Roses has been breeding garden roses for over 60 years. Since then, the company has released more than 240 varieties, blending the charm of old-world roses with modern resilience.
