Voting open for the 2025 Tree of the Year competition

The 2025 Woodland Trust Tree of the Year competition looks to celebrate the value of trees in our cultural history.

Shining a light on magnificent trees across the UK that are local landmarks, sources of passion, inspiration and creativity, the annual Woodland Trust Tree of the Year competition aims to highlight the importance of trees in our landscapes, our lives and as a force to combat climate change and biodiversity loss.

For 2025, a total of ten majestic trees have been shortlisted from across the UK, including the much loved, hardy little birch, named the Lonely Tree (pictured) of Llyn Padarn, Llanberis. Perched alone on the shore of a vast, glassy lake against a backdrop of Eryri’s majestic mountains, this young birch is a cherished local landmark and a photographer’s dream. Its bent, stretching shape has contorted in response to harsh weather conditions, making it a symbol of resilience and a fascinating focus for the lens through all seasons. The scene is everchanging as the lake levels rise and recede, with the tree alternately exposing its tenacious roots at the water’s edge or clinging to its own tiny island as the surroundings are submerged.

Voting is open until 11.59pm on the 19th of September and the winning tree announced on the 26th of September. The winner will go on to represent the UK in the next European Tree of the Year competition.
