Tropical tree, brought from Grenada in the 1980’s and growing in Battersea, London has been protected by a Tree Preservation Order.

Planted by Marline Anderson, in her Battersea front garden as a sapling, the grapefruit tree has since grown to become a much beloved local landmark. Thought to be only one of its kind growing in the UK, outside of Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, the tree bears fruit all year round, to the joy of its neighbours.

In commemoration of the passing of Anderson earlier this year, local residents initiated a campaign to safeguard the tree as a memorial. The Wandsworth Council has subsequently granted a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), ensuring the preservation of the tree for future generations. A commemorative plaque honouring Anderson provides an account of the tree’s historical significance to any passerby.

Commenting, Kemi Akinola, Deputy Leader of Wandsworth Council, said: “We were very pleased to grant the Tree Preservation Order and ensure that this beloved local landmark stands for generations to come. Marline was much-loved by her neighbours and we’re proud to have listened to the wishes of the community. In our year as London Borough of Culture, it’s great to recognise the contribution that people of African and Caribbean heritage have made to Wandsworth.”
