Bristol-based Candide developed the gardening app in 2017. Founded by Andrew Philbrick, the startup known for the Newt’s contactless ticketing solutions, developed the app to help and inspire gardeners, through innovative technology and passion for sharing knowledge.

On the closure of the app, Martin Lovell, Candide Head of Product said:

“Since our inception in 2017, it’s been Candide’s mission to use technology for the benefit of Gardeners and the Gardening industry. You’re probably aware that little has changed on Candide in the last year, and the app is no longer available to download. Candide’s business has changed dramatically since those days, and we no longer have the team or resources to build and maintain a social network. Therefore, we’ve sadly taken the decision to shut down the Candide app from the 7th December 2023. We’d like to thank you for your support over the years and wish you all the best in your future gardening endeavours”.

For those still using Candide to access a garden membership, users are advised to move to that specific garden’s own app. Candide confirm that they have sent instructions to users earlier in the year but any that are struggling to do so, or didn’t receive this information are to contact Candide on support@candide.com.

In terms of recommendations for users to migrate to, Lovell recommended the RHS Grow and Iris from Crocus.
