Harrow School is one of the world’s most famous schools. Founded in 1572 by a local yeoman farmer, John Lyon, under a Royal Charter granted by Queen Elizabeth I, it is located on a 324-acre estate encompassing much of Harrow on the Hill in north-west London. Around 830 boys aged 13 to 18, who come from all over Britain and across the world, live in the School’s 12 boarding Houses, and there are about 120 academic staff and over 500 support staff.
The school is situated within a beautiful site in Harrow on the Hill, northwest London and has over 350 acres of ground with many varieties of trees. As well as general tree maintenance and reactive tree work, there is also a program of succession planting, conservation work, biodiversity enhancement and hedge maintenance.
The Head of Arboriculture is responsible for line managing the Arboriculture team and delivering practical arboricultural operations within the Harrow School estate, including tree climbing, aerial rescue,
dismantling, pruning, stump treatments, hedge maintenance, pest identification /management and
equipment maintenance. The post-holder will also be responsible for all the associated risk assessments
and administration work associated with these tasks.
The candidate will have a Level 3 or equivalent Certificate in Arboriculture, an aerial tree rigging qualification, a driving license for travelling around our extensive site and NPTC CS 30, 31, 38- 41 qualifications. You will manage and develop a small team to be a group of knowledgeable arborist professionals, conducting risk assessments and overseeing stringent health and safety working practices. Your passion for trees, nature and the natural environment will be evident as you conduct tree risk surveys and develop tree establishment/succession planting plans that protect and enhance the trees on the estate for future generations at Harrow School.
