Horatio’s Garden is a UK charity that nurtures wellbeing of people after spinal injury in beautiful, vibrant sanctuaries in the heart of NHS spinal injury centres. The first Horatio’s Garden opened in 2012 and the charity’s mission is to grow thriving communities and biodiverse gardens in all 11 UK spinal injury centres.
Pictured from left to right, meet the charity’s Head Gardeners:
- Amy Moffett: Horatio’s Garden Stoke Mandeville. Moffett is a Kew-trained horticulturalist, with a passion for plants, trees, fungi and wildlife as well as a maker of beautiful jewellery.
- Matthew Lee: Horatio’s Garden Northern Ireland. Lee spent 18 years working for the NHS before moving to working professionally in horticulture. He has a Foundation Degree in Horticulture from the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise’s (CAFRE) Greenmount Campus.
- Owen Griffiths: Horatio’s Garden Wales. Griffiths is Kew-trained with a wealth of varied experience in the social and therapeutic horticulture sector. He is passionate about forest gardening and its role in mitigating climate change.
- Alex Law: Horatio’s Garden Midlands. Law is an RHS Wisley-trained horticulturist with a passion for plants, people, and the planet. He has worked in several UK gardens, most recently as Head Gardener of Wollerton Old Hall in North Shropshire.
- Kath Moss, the Director of Gardens at Horatio’s Garden. Kath joined the team as Director of Gardens in November 2023. She has an extensive background in horticulture and strategic garden management, and is passionate about creating and maintaining environments which are both beautiful and functional. Moss has worked at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, Auckland Botanic Gardens in New Zealand, and has most recently been managing significant historic landscapes for a local authority.
- Ashley Edwards: Horatio’s Garden London & South East. Edwards graduated from Royal Botanic Gardens Kew in 2014, after completing the School of Horticulture’s diploma course. He worked at Longwood Gardens in the USA, was a Garden Manager intern at the Anna Tasca Lanza Cooking School in Sicily and Gardener-in-Charge at Strawberry Hill House & Garden, the former Twickenham residence of Horace Walpole and later Lady Frances Waldegrave.
- Chelsea Lowe: Horatio’s Garden Scotland. Lowe is a graduate 0f the WFGA Practical Horticultural Apprenticeship and trained under the Head Gardener and Horticultural Therapist Sallie Sillars at the stunning Horatio’s Garden Scotland. Lowe is a lifelong gardener, passionate about plants, people and landscapes.
- Lucy Thorpe: Horatio’s Garden South West. Thorpe has worked in horticultural therapy and education for 15 years. She is also a freelance nature-based therapist, passionate about the benefits of horticulture for mental health and wellbeing.
