The curriculum review is currently in process and participation represents a significant opportunity for horticulture to become a core part of education.

The Curriculum and Assessment Review by the Department for Education, is the systematic collection, review, and use of information to increase students’ learning and development. The results of the assessment provide qualitative information for the faculty to determine how they might improve courses and/or programs through changes in curriculum, teaching methodologies, course materials, or other areas.

National curriculum reviews do not come around very often, and therefore presents a rare opportunity to influence the direction of the education system and to push for horticulture to become a core part of education. Horticulture is not just an interesting and enjoyable subject, but impacts daily life, helps to develop vital awareness of nature and sustainability, as well as aiding mental health and well-being.

The horticulture sector is struggling to attract new talent and is still perceived as unattractive and inaccessible. Common misconceptions about the sector, coupled with a lack of careers guidance, contribute to the perception of horticulture as an unattractive career choice. As recommended in the House of Lords Horticultural Sector Committee report, incorporating horticulture into the educational curriculum will help to ensure a steady future supply of skilled workers.

Horticulture needs to be properly integrated into curriculum and the culture of schools or it will always remain a niche profession, or a hobby at best.

The assessment is open to parents, teachers, the community, administrators, and curriculum publishers and runs until the 22nd of November, 2024.
