Bred by the hydrangea specialists, Alex Schoemaker of Living Creations in the Netherlands, Hydrangea paniculata ‘Groundbreaker® Blush’ is a dwarf shrub, with ground cover habit, reaching a height and spread of around 40-50cm, making it ideal for use in open ground, as well as a variety of containers.
Due to its versatile nature this plant will appeal to gardeners with both small (patio) gardens and large gardens, as well as professionals to cover large areas. Additionally so, due to its resilience as it will perform even in sunny, drought conditions and has an extensive flowering period that lasts for months.
According to the sixth generation hydrangea breeder, the new variety produces an abundance of blooms from July to November. The conical clusters of four-petalled flowers are pink and white in varying degrees, depending on the maturity of the blooms. Fully hardy (to –30C), this new deciduous shrub will not need any additional winter protection throughout the majority of the UK. It requires moist, well-drained, humus rich soil in full sun or partial shade – but reportedly will perform best with 6-8 hours of sun per day.
Awarded a gold medal (KBVC Goud) at its public debut at the August 2024 Plantarium show in Holland – one of the biggest European trade shows, where it was awarded a gold medal (KVBC Goud). Hydrangea Groundbreaker® BlushTM will compete in this year’s New Plant Competition at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
Currently supplied by Hayloft and Thompson & Morgan, Groundbreaker® BlushTM will be available in UK garden centres from the beginning of July 2025. According to a spokesperson from the Blue Diamond Garden Centres Group, they have bought the lions share of available stock, meaning their garden centres represent some of the few locations to purchase the new hydrangea this year.
