Using ancient materials and techniques, Derbyshire-based artist Laura Ellen Bacon will make an immersive and embracing installation, entitled ‘Into Being’ for the 18th-century Chapel in the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP).
A British sculptor, Bacon transforms raw natural materials into architectural and natural structures that beautifully engulf objects or sit in the landscape. In tune with nature, Laura’s outdoor sculptures are creating from nature for nature. Known for her unique large-scale, woven works using natural materials, Bacon’s artworks are set in landscape and interiors such as Chatsworth Somerset House, Sudeley Castle and Blackwell.
“To be offered the chance to create new work that feels rooted to this historic building and part of its unique atmosphere is a privilege. The visual gestures of both vigour and stillness in the shape of this woven work will be evidence of my physical input and also my quiet, total absorption of the sense of place,” explained Bacon.
Woven in willow, the work responds to the historic architecture of the venue with its abstract forms and scale creating a compelling sensory experience. Visitors will be able to stand within the sculpture to fully immerse in the sensory beauty of the material and intricate construction.
According to the artist, it will take her over eight weeks to create the sculpture, to draw in the space and make the self-supporting structure that through its material and form, will conjure a primal instinct to nest and connect with the natural world.
Bacon’s Into Being exhibition in the YSP, will take place from the 5th of April until the 7th of September 2025.
