Jekka’s Herb Farm: Horticulturist

Renowned herb nursery in Gloucestershire is looking to recruit a qualified horticulturalist for a full time role.

The family run Herb farm, fronted by herb grower and expert, Jekka McVicar was established in 1984 and specialises in the growing & usage of medicinal & culinary herb plants and seeds. The Herb Farm is also home to Jekka’s Herbetum and Jekka’s Herb Garden, where herb related events, workshops and open days are regularly organised.

Jekka’s Herb Farm are looking for a dedicated, passionate plants person to join the team to assist in the care and maintenance of the 400 different types of herb grown at the farm. The applicant needs to have an understanding of the fundamental horticulture skills and to be keen to learn and develop in a nursery environment.

The candidate will have a passion for plants and a desire to learn. You must be pro-active, flexible and adaptable as every-day could be different depending on the weather or events run at the farm. Typical tasks include potting and sowing seeds and ensuring the herbs are correctly maintained by watering and cleaning. The applicant will also support the other areas of the farm, such as Mail order, Open Days and Herb Experiences. An eye for detail is essential for watering, propagating herbs and spotting pest and disease. You must be physically fit, keen to work outdoors in all weathers and as the farm is remotely located, own transport is essential.

RHS level 2 (preferably 3) or equivalent is desirable. Previous horticultural experience (ideally 3 years + in a relevant field) is advantageous as is experience in propagation, potting, watering and knowledge of pests and diseases. The job requires 39 hours per week and the candidate must be prepared to be flexible to meet operational and visitor requirements.
