Playing an important role in the governance of the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), the Council is represented by all regions and regional representatives act as contact points for members in their area. Chaired by the HTA President, Will Armitage, the council meets some three times per year.

“I applied for the role on the HTA Council to further my knowledge of the horticulture sector and engage with other members. I am enthusiastic to learn from them and to explore what can be done to raise the profile of horticulture in Wales, our AMs and MPs need to understand the unique challenges we face, and I am looking forward to hearing from members across Wales, representing their views and strengthening our collective voice,” explained Katie Eckley.

Eckley started her career in horticulture over 26 years ago at the Old Railway Line Garden Centre, a family business founded by her parents, Mark and Christina Cleary. Armed with a BSc in Horticulture, Eckley has earned a gold medal and Best in Show at the RHS Malvern Show, as well as receive recognition from both Pershore College and Worcester University for her dissertation on the genetics of rare wildflowers, which she carried out in conjunction with The Botanic Garden of Wales. She was appointed Director of Operations at the Old Railway Line Garden Centre in 2020, where she oversees the day-to-day running of the business.

“I am excited to take on this role and committed to championing the sector, supporting businesses, and promoting the many benefits it brings to our communities and the environment. So if you’re a member in Wales, I’d love to hear from you. Let’s keep sharing our stories and championing the importance of horticulture across our communities,” added Eckley.
