Known for his elegant Japanese landscapes and his jubilant, unrestrained award celebrations, garden designer Kazuyuki Ishihara is a regular at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. He has exhibited 14 times, winning 12 Gold medals and four Best in Show awards.
For his ‘Tomorrow’s Eden — Gardens for a Changing World’ exhibit at the 2025 PHS Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s (PHS) Philadelphia Flower Show, Ishihara had much to be jubilant about as he won:
- The PHS Gold medal; the PHS Philadelphia Flower Show Silver Trophy for receiving the second-highest number of points.
- The American Horticultural Society Environmental Award for the best demonstration of the bond between horticulture and the environment to inspire viewers.
- The Kate and Robert Bartlett, Jr. Award, for the best use of trees.
- The Pennsylvania Landscape & Nursery Association Trophy for the most effective use of plants and best use of design.
- The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Choice Award – the first ever award presented by the RHS at the Philadelphia Flower Show demonstrating their international cooperation to inspire visitors and the horticultural industry alike.
“When it feels like we need international cooperation more than ever, we are thrilled to be with our friends from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) and to give the RHS Choice Award to Tomorrow’s Eden by Japanese Designer Kazuyuki Ishihara with his son and Treeline Designz. Congratulations to PHS for a wonderful show that is bursting with flowers, plants and people,” said Clare Matterson, Director General of the RHS.
Tomorrow’s Eden Garden
Designed by Ishihara, his son and Treeline Designz, the exhibit explores the interplay between two distinct yet interconnected garden spaces, highlighting how one garden can uplift and sustain the other. Inspired by the resilience of nature amidst threats like pollution, climate change, and drought, the garden presents a hopeful vision of regeneration and renewal.
The lush, futuristic landscape celebrates the adaptability of plants and emphasises humanity’s responsibility to preserve the delicate balance of our planet.

Ishihara will be back at RHS Chelsea this year, with the Cha No Niwa – Japanese Tea Garden.
