Andover Mind is a mental health charity dedicated to providing support and services to individuals experiencing mental health challenges. The charity’s ‘Garden for Mind’ is a therapeutic green space dedicated to enhancing mental health and wellbeing. The garden serves as a sanctuary for individuals seeking solace and connection with nature and hosts a variety of activities designed to promote wellbeing and mental health.
In support of the charity, garden designer, broadcaster and mental health advocate, Leigh Johnstone is organising the Garden Gathering, an event promising a series of expert-led workshops, live demonstrations, plant sales, and family-friendly activities. Speakers include, the presenter and garden designer Chris Hull, the children’s gardening educator, Lee Connelly and the broadcaster and author, Ellen Mary.
The event will also feature talks by the garden designer, Katherine Holland and the mushroom growers, the Caley Brothers. Houseplant expert, Gemma Haigh will be on hand to provide advice the ‘houseplant hub’. For children, Lee Connelly leads a mini children’s gardening festival, as well as an interactive soil zone.
Johnstone, aka The Beardy Gardener, formerly a theatre director, rediscovered his passion for plants during the Covid-19 pandemic and now uses his platform to promote the therapeutic benefits of gardening. He has appeared on BBC Gardeners’ World, BBC News, LBC and has been featured in The New York Times.
“Gardening quite literally saved my life. When I was at my lowest it was the garden that supported me through it. I have brought together some of my horticultural friends for a celebration of how connecting with nature can uplift our spirits and bring us together.”
The Garden Gathering takes place on Saturday, 21st June 2025 at the Longstock Park Nursery, Leckford Estate (SO20 6EH). All proceeds from the event will benefit Andover Mind’s ‘Garden for Mind’ in support of mental health through horticultural activities.
