Estimates from the Department for Work and Pensions’ Family Resources Survey indicate that 16 million people in the UK were registered as having a disability in the 2021/22, representing 24% of the total population. Four million of these, are older adults living with a limiting long-term illness or disability. Safety of outdoor spaces is therefore a pressing issue, especially considering that falls in adults aged 65+ account for over 50% of injury-related hospital admissions and 40% of all injury deaths. Understandably, the fear of falling prevents older people from getting much needed time outdoors.

Installing adaptions that support people to get in and out, and around their home and gardens, can be make all the difference. Unfortunately, low-cost adaptions, such as grab rails, as encouraged by England’s Chief Medical Officer, Chris Witty, are often installed too late, reducing their effectiveness as preventative measures. Many people resist these products because they appear too clinical. Alongside aesthetics; a 2013/14 National Trading Standards Board survey found that 43% of doorstep crime victims had features such as handrails, suggesting that these items may sometimes be used by offenders to identify vulnerable residents.

Broadcaster, writer and garden designer, Mark Lane, is a passionate advocate for accessibility and ambassador for Invisible Creations’ new garden range. As someone who has faced his own challenges with accessibility, Lane understands the importance of creating gardens that are not only beautiful but also safe and welcoming for everyone.

“I’m delighted to support Invisible Creations with the introduction of their new garden grab rail range. Gardening has the power to improve our health and well-being, and it should be accessible to all, regardless of age or ability. These grab rails are a game-changer, offering both style and safety, and I’m proud to support a product that will make such a positive impact,” said Lane.

Co-designed with users and The Royal College of Art, Invisible Creations’ new garden grab rails, focus on safety, functionality, and style. Engineered with robust materials, they provide essential support for individuals navigating their outdoor spaces, increasing access for all and reducing the risk of falls. Beyond their safety features, these grab rails double as planters, path lights, and plant pots, enhancing the accessibility of any outdoor space.

Director Laura Wood, said, “Gardens are our sanctuaries, and our enjoyment shouldn’t be limited or defined by circumstances outside of our control. Invisible Creations is dedicated to enhancing freedom of movement and reducing falls, empowering individuals with the confidence to navigate their homes and gardens with ease.”

Wood was inspired to start the company by her grandmother’s daily mobility challenges, understanding the struggles and joys that small improvements could bring. In 2022, the company partnered with ProCare, to further enhance distribution and impact – offering support without compromising style.

The new Invisible Creations garden range will be on show at GLEE 2024 (stand 9E80) at GLEE 2024.
