Running for a second year, Pocket Garden Makeover competition offers a winner the opportunity to have their small outdoor space, courtyard or balcony transformed by an expert gardening team, led by garden designer Chris Hull.

By means of the competition, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and The One Show aim to highlight the benefits of gardening and inspire people to see the potential of ‘pocket-sized’ outdoor spaces, demonstrating that with just a few small changes a green sanctuary can be created for people, plants and wildlife.

The competition is open for entries, from the 18th February 2025 until the 28th February 2025 and the results will be announced on The One Show in May. Applicants may either enter themselves or nominate someone. Entrants will be asked to provide their creative vision for the space as well as talk about the impact a transformation would have on them or their nominee.

The winner of the competition will receive a small garden space or balcony makeover up to the value of £6,000 by the landscaping team, including a consultation and design from garden designer, Chris Hull. Hull is the host of the BBC One Garden Rescue program and runs Greenbrook Landscape Design.

“Everyone should be able to benefit from a garden space where they can unwind and connect with nature. A well-designed outdoor area, no matter how small, can become a peaceful retreat, a thriving habitat for plants and wildlife, and a source of joy and inspiration. I’m excited to help the deserving winner bring their vision to life and in doing so to encourage even more people to harness the power of gardening and create their own green sanctuaries,” said Chris Hull.

Guy Barter, RHS Chief Horticulturist, said: “Small space gardening knows no bounds – think vertical veg planters, colourful climbers for canopy and pot loving trees and shrubs. We’re delighted to help Chris and team transform an as yet unloved outdoor space into a garden this spring.”
