The Chanticleer USA Christopher Lloyd Scholarship

Open for applications, the Chanticleer USA Christopher Lloyd Scholarship at Great Dixter supports a horticulturist to study at Great Dixter in East Sussex, England and at Chanticleer in Wayne, Pennsylvania.

Great Dixter Gardens, Sussex, Great Britain (22 of 23) | Traditional topiary in this English garden

The Chanticleer USA Christopher Lloyd Scholarship was conceived to provide a gardener from the United States with a year-long, practical education in the traditional style of ornamental gardening as practiced at two of the world’s most respected gardens, Great Dixter in East Sussex, England, and Chanticleer near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

Named in honour of Great Dixter’s Christopher Lloyd who established close ties with Chanticleer. The scholarship is open to U.S. citizen trainee gardeners who are U.S. citizens and is funded by Chanticleer.

The one-year scholarship allows the candidate the chance to spend 11 months at Great Dixter and one month at Chanticleer, to develop practical skills and the ‘sense of place’ needed to manage complex, innovative gardens. The hope is that that the scholar, in turn, will inspire a future generation of North American gardeners, passing on vital knowledge and skills.

The scholar will receive a bursary from Chanticleer to cover their living costs while in the UK. Accommodation is provided at both gardens for the duration of the scholarship.

The application deadline for the 2025-2026 placement is the 1st of November 2024.
