The annual awards ceremony is the highlight of the British Society of Magazine Editors (BSME), which is designed to celebrate editorial excellence and innovation across digital and print publications in the UK. Winners included features and lifestyle director for The Times and The Sunday Times and editor of The Times Magazine, Nicola Jeal, who was named Editors’ Editor of the Year, while the Mark Boxer lifetime achievement award went to Edward Enninful OBE, editor-in-chief of Vogue.
Tom Howard won the BSME Editor Of The Year Award, in the Homes, Gardens & Country category for RHS The Garden magazine. As Head of RHS Editorial, Howard has been at the helm of The Garden since December 2020. The Garden, a monthly publication for the members of the RHS, has a circulation of 520,000.
About the The Garden magazine, the judges said, “This magazine has been through an evolution based on clear reader insight – and the result is an incredibly targeted product that still feels warm, beautiful and inclusive for the community it serves.”
On winning, Howard said “Dead chuffed to win Editor Of The Year in the Homes, Gardens & Country category at the British Society Of Magazine Editors Awards, or what we in publishing like to call The Oscars For Magazines. The award is testament to all the hard and excellent work The Garden team puts in. It feels amazing for that to be recognised by the best of the best.
