Established by Frank Fol in 1989, the We’re Smart® World Green Guide aims to stimulate a transition by policy makers, food producers, the hospitality industry and consumers towards ecological and intelligent solutions for the body, nature and the planet.
Restaurants are evaluated on the percentage of fruit and vegetables on the menu, culinary creativity, originality, techniques, communication, ecological footprint and social impact, and is hence awarded 1 to 5 Radishes in their Green Guide.
Gravetye Manor’s ‘The Dining Room‘ came 35th, as the top UK restaurant in the ranking followed swiftly by Simon Rogan’s L’Enclume restaurant in Cumbria, in 36th position.
Gravetye Manor, set in over 35 acres of beautiful grounds was originally created by visionary gardener William Robinson in 1885, and the gardens are now considered to be one of the most important historic gardens in England. The gardens, including the extensive kitchen garden is managed head gardener Tom Coward, and his dedicated team. The Dining Room restaurant was awarded a Michelin Star in 2015 and have managed to retain it to date.
Subsequent worthy winners include; Apricity in London (57th), Moor Hall in Lancashire (73rd), The Walled Gardens in Manchester (84th) and The Riverford Field Kitchen in Devon (90th).
The enviable top spot went to ‘De Nieuwe Winkel‘ restaurant in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, who pride themselves on their botanical gastronomy. According to the judges, “rarely is the story so perfectly told, the flavours so well balanced, innovation so truly innovative, and the knowledge and motivation of the team so strong as it is here”.
